Ryan Lochte Returns to the 400 IM with Top Seed at Atlanta Classic

While fast swims began two days ago in Indianapolis, the 2018 Atlanta Classic splashed into action this morning at the McAuley Aquatic Center.

Ryan Lochte made his return to the 400 IM today with a top showing of 4:30.35, pretty impressive considering he also qualified in both the 200 free and 100 fly this morning.

Michael Andrew posted a new meet record in the 100 breast and Erika Brown flew ahead of the competition in the 100 fly.

Women’s 200 Free

Meaghan Raab of Nashville Aquatic Club powered to the top seed in prelims of the women’s 200 free, posting the only sub-two minute time at a 1:59.90.

Jordan Stout, representing Athens Bulldogs, turned in a 2:01.86 for the second place seed, while Tennessee Aquatics teammates Stanzi Moseley (2:02.39) and Erika Brown (2:02.42) picked up third and fourth.

Oakville’s Tessa Cieplucha grabbed the fifth place seed with a 2:02.90, followed by Cavalier Swimming’s Paige Madden’s 2:03.29.

Samantha Porter (2:03.98), Marlins of Raleigh’s Maddie Homovich (2:04.37), Yellow Jacket’s Emily Ilgenfritz (2:04.95), and Athens Bulldogs’ Sandra Scott (2:05.35) completed the top ten qualifiers.

Men’s 200 Free

16-year-old Jake Magahey of SwimAtlanta bested the men’s 200 free preliminary field, claiming the top seed with a time of 1:51.85.

Javier Acevedo of Ajax grabbed the second place seed with a 1:52.23, followed closely by a 1:52.39 from Ryan Lochte, currently representing Daytona Beach Speed.

Maxime Rooney of the Pleasanton Seahawks joined the 1:52 club with a fourth-place qualifying time of 1:52.72, just ahead of  Harvard’s Dean Farris’ 1:53.01.

Walker Higgins (1:53.07), Santa Clara’s Aidan Burns (1:53.35), Gator Swim Club’s Mitch D’Arrigo (1:53.55), SwimAtlanta’s Bradley Dunham (1:53.89), and Swim Florida’s Santi Corredor (1:54.24) also qualified for the A final.

Caeleb Dressel of Gator Swim Club finished 16th in prelims with a time of 1:55.04.

Women’s 100 Breast

Micah Sumrall of Chattahoochee Gold edged out Tennessee Aquatics’ Molly Hannis for the top seed in prelims of the women’s 100 breast, posting a qualifying time of 1:08.57 over Hannis’ 1:09.21.

Rachel Bernhardt of Gamecock Aquatics collected the third place seed with a time of 1:09.89, while Meaghan Raab of Nashavile Aquatic Club picked up fourth with a 1:11.09.

18-year-old Vanessa Pearl, representing Metroplex Aquatics, led a quad of teenagers into the top heat with a time of 1:11.27. She was followed by Tennessee Aquatics’ Meghan Small (1:11.48), Athens Bulldogs’ Danielle DellaTorre (1:11.76), and Athens Bulldogs’ Jordyn Gulle (1:12.49).

Caitlin Casazza, also representing Athens Bulldogs, and Nikol Popov of Tennessee Aquatics rounded out the top ten qualifiers with times of 1:13.16 and 1:13.24.

Men’s 100 Breast

Michael Andrew of Race Pace Club flirted with a sub-one minute swim in prelims of the men’s 100 breast, settling instead for a new meet record of 1:00.15. His time eclipsed the previous meet record of 1:01.41, set by Andrew Wilson in 2016, by more than a second.

Tiger Elite’s Miguel DeLara finished second in prelims with a time of 1:02.51, just ahead of Pointe-Claire’s James Guest’s time of 1:03.04.

Lionel Khoo, representing Gamecock Aquatics, added a fourth place seed time of 1:03.12, while Tennessee Aquatics’ Matthew Dunphy took fifth in prelims with a 1:04.02.

Minnesota’s Conner McHugh (1:04.31), Club Seminole’s Juan Sequera (1:04.62), Azura’s Marco Guarente (1:04.79), Minnesota’s Eitan Yudashkin (1:04.84), and Avon’s Chandler Bray (1:04.88) completed the top ten.

Caeleb Dressel finished 17th in prelims with a time of 1:06.91.

Women’s 100 Fly

Erika Brown of Tennessee Aquatics continued to establish herself as a strong butterflyer with a 1:00.51 showing in prelims of the 100 fly.

Tiger Elite’s Haley Black picked up the second place seed with a 1:01.14, followed closely by Nations Capital’s Abby Harter’s 1:01.26.

Brown’s teammate, Meghan Small, took fourth in prelims with a 1:01.27, while the Athens Bulldogs duo of Caitlin Casazza (1:01.80) and Donna Blaum (1:01.93) were fifth and sixth.

Tennessee’s Stanzi Moseley (1:02.19), Canada’s Penny Oleksiak (1:02.24), NCAP’s Mackenzie McConagha (1:02.86), and Cavalier Swimming’s Paige Madden (1:03.01) were seventh through tenth in prelims.

Guatemala’s Luis Martinez flew to the top of the qualifying list in prelims of the men’s 100 fly, turning in a 53.68.

Michael Andrew, fresh off a new meet record in the 100 breast, picked up second with a 54.55. Pleasanton’s Maxime Rooney qualified close behind with a 54.87, while Marlins of Raleigh’s Zach Brown was fourth in prelims with a 55.34.

Metro Atlanta’s Will Davis IV grabbed a narrow fifth with a 56.06, followed closely by Tennessee’s Marc Hinawi’s 56.08.

SwimAtlanta’s Blake Atmore (56.17), Daytona Beach Speed’s Ryan Lochte (56.20), Cal’s Ethan Young (56.21), and Club Seminole’s Will Pisani (56.54) were seventh through tenth.

Women’s 400 IM

Maddie Homovich, representing Marlins of Raleigh, claimed a decisive first-place seed in prelims of the women’s 400 IM. The 18-year-old powered to a 4:50.14, finishing close to three seconds ahead of second-place qualifier Kelly Fertel (4:53.02) of Gator Swim Club.

Emma Barkdale, representing Gamecock Aquatics, posted a 4:53.31 to qualify third, followed by Metroplex’s Vanessa Pearl’s 4:54.96.

Homovich’s teammates, Kate Moore and Julia Poole, picked up the fifth- and sixth-place seeds with times of 4:55.10 and 4:55.87 respectively.

Tennessee’s Alexis Yager (4:57.70), Dolphins’ Meghan Lynch (4:58.75), Gator Swim Club’s Savanna Faulconer (4:58.79), and SwimAtlanta’s Abigail McCulloh (5:01.92) rounded out the top ten.

Men’s 400 IM

While he was off some of his personal best times, Ryan Lochte returned to the 400 IM and claimed the top seed with a time of 4:30.35.

James Guest of Pointe-Claire picked up the second-place seed with a 4:32.61, while the third-place seed was snagged by Swim Florida’s Santi Corredor’s 4:33.39.

Gator Swim Club’s Mark Szaranek took fourth in prelims with a 4:35.18, just ahead of Gamecock Aquatics’ Tom Peribonio’s 4:35.61.

SwimAtlanta’s Jake Magahey (4:35.63), Metroplex’s Jed Jones (4:37.67), Marlins of Raleigh’s Zach Brown (4:38.63), Tennessee’s Owen Devine (4:39.82), and Marlins of Raleigh’s Josh Legge (4:39.83) posted the sixth through tenth place qualifying times.
